My Personal Timeline

2002: LEAPPAD™, TELEVISION, RADIO

In this year, my parents already exposed me to television, films, and listening to music. The LeapPad™, moreover, is a range of tablet computers designed for children. It developed my cognitive skills at an early age. Also, my parents would take with them to watch films and listen to nursery rhymes. For them it is essential for an infant growing up to learn with the use of audio-visual materials.

2003: PENCIL, PAPER, CRAYONS

My mother taught me early on how to write basic letters when I was 3 years old. I was exposed to the use of pencils, crayons, and paper. I even wrote on the wall of our house. My parents never decided to paint them and just kept all the "ABAKADA" and the "ABCs" that I have written. That time, I used the media to learn and to play.

2004: BOOKS

My mother also taught me before I started school in 2005. She first introduced to me books about writing and letters. I used them to trace and write letters, words, even my name. It also served to my advantage because I already learned to read basic and common words at a young age before I even started Kindergarten.

2005: MOBILE PHONES

My first exposure to mobile phones was in 2005. My father owns a Nokia model and my mother a Motorola. That time, I was still a toddler, and the only purpose of phones for me is for leisure. I only play games installed on the phone or sometimes take and look at the pictures in the gallery. I did not use it that time for communication because I still do not know how phones work, except for the games.

2007: TYPEWRITER

I was in first grade when my aunt started working as the secretary in our barangay. At times, she will bring me to her office and let me use her typewriter. Also at that time, I was only using it to try typing my name numerous time. I was new to the idea of the typewriter wherein it can be used in typing words than merely writing them with paper and pencil.

2009: TABLETS AND NETBOOK

In 2009, we had our own tablets and an Asus netbook. This is when my parents decided that we should have one since school works are starting to depend on the use of electronic media. I use the netbook for writing homework that needed to be typewritten and the tablets to store documents needed for class presentations and projects.

2010: FACEBOOK

In 2010, I had my first Facebook account. I used it to chat with my friends and relatives. With the aid of the netbook, I would also log in on my account to check the recent events and news. It was easy because in just one, I can already talk with other people and learn things happening around the world. Unfortunately, it was hacked on 2013 and I had to close it and just create a new one.

2012: SMARTPHONES, SD CARD

My mother gave me her current phone because they thought I was ready to have my own. It was a Cherry Mobile Sapphire Android phone equipped with microSD so I can store files more on my phone. it also has a front and rear camera, and I used it to take pictures. I was also able to access the Internet so I was able to communicate with my friends and family by sending text messages or through online.

2013: SOCIAL MEDIA

After having my Facebook account hacked, I created a new one. This time, I also set up my Twitter account. I use both platforms to talk to my friends and family, to keep myself updated with the news and homework as well as school works posted on different Facebook groups, to watch videos, and for leisure

2014: PERSONAL LAPTOP, E-BOOKS, USB

I was a scholar in the company where my father works, and one incentive I get from the allowance is to have my laptop. We still kept the netbook but only mostly for games that my sisters play. I use my laptop more frequently now that I am in MaSci to work on my paperwork, projects, and presentations. It is also suitable for viewing videos because it is larger than the netbook. Also, I was exposed to E-Books and USB to store documents and folders that I will be needing.

2017: DIFFERENT MEDIA

Now in 2017, I still use some of the media already stated in previous years. I am just more exposed to them because of the innovations in technology. Media has created communication, education, travel, news, etc. easier in this digital age.

Internet of Things as Theory of Media and Information

          A. In your own words, define Internet of Things
The Internet of Things pertains to almost all things connected with electronics. These may include software, network connectivity and others that allow the sharing of data.

          B. What brought this theory about?
This theory is brought about its aim to make things in our modern lives faster, easier, more reliable and more accessible. Experts agree that we cannot avoid digitization. The only open question is how fast this will happen. This then leads us to their vision, that waiting is not an option: Everything that can be digitized, will be digitized and everything that can be connected, will be connected.

          C. Do you like the concept of IoT ? Why or why not?
As said, we cannot really avoid being digitized in this modern day. I like the concept of IoT because I think, in connection to the constant need for change of people, it will allow us to improve the quality of our lives for the reason that it aids us to be convenient and comfortable. Moreover, it helps our work to become faster and easier leading to saving more time and effort. Still, to mitigate the negative effects, discipline should be implanted to each and everyone.

          D. In what situations do you encounter IoT in the Philippines?
In the Philippines, most homes, like mine, are interconnectd because of Internet.  The vehicles, especially cars and UV for hire, can now be hired through the use of smart devices. My father also works in a company wherein buildings and offices are equipped with IoT and use their own network to communicate (VPN).

          E. How do you think IoT will evolve and affect Filipino society in the next 3 to 5 years?
For me, the IoT will affect the Filipino society massively. We are included in the top nations that are using the net frequently. Also, there is this culture within Filipinos to try something new, or even improve it. I think the Filipino society will whole-heartedly accept IoT in their daily lives. Maybe at first, few people will have the knowledge and access for it but in the coming years, I think it will be a widespread event for us.

          F. What do you think is the relationship / cause and effect of IoT in media and information literacy?
With the proper knowledge and leaarning of individuals in  media and information literacy, it can lead to a more understanding and disciplined approach to the application of IoT in our lives. With the skills acquired in media and information, people will then know the responsible use of incorporating it with the IoT. Media and information literacy does not only help in the possibility that IoT can be made, but also to help ensure that it lasts a long time and help in the development of the society as well.
